Arizona Game & Fish Department Headquarters

The Arizona Game & Fish Department Headquarters was designed as a full-service center to support research operations, vehicle maintenance, public assemblies, education instruction, department administration and customer service for residents in the State of Arizona. The result was a fully integrated, state-of-the-art LEED Platinum certified facility. Green Ideas implemented several sustainable strategies into the project, making it the first LEED Platinum level facility in Phoenix, and one of only four in Arizona. The building employs design features and technology that reduce the need for artificial light, help with temperature control, reduce exterior water usage through natural landscaping, and decrease interior water use via water-efficient plumbing fixtures. Among the features is a 189-kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system that will generate an estimated 290,000 kWh annually, offsetting the equivalent of 208 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

Sustainable Strategies

  • Zero CFC-based refrigerants in HVAC base building systems improve Indoor Environmental Quality

  • High-performance, reflective roofing system reduces the Urban Heat Island Effect

  • Low-flow fixtures reduce domestic water use

  • Occupancy sensors and permanent monitoring system were installed to minimize energy use

  • Architectural shading features control solar heat gain

  • Wood products used in the product were harvested from Forest Stewardship Council certified forests

  • Low VOC-emitting materials for the building’s interior creates enhanced Indoor Environmental Quality

Project Results

  • LEED for New Construction Platinum level achieved

  • 65% energy cost savings above ASHRAE 90.1-1999 energy standard

  • 73% savings of potable water use for irrigation

  • 58% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill
