Prior to forming Green Ideas, Mark served as president of GreenBuilt Consulting, LLC, a national sustainable building consultancy serving clients in the design, construction and energy industries. Through GreenBuilt, Mr. Wilhelm consulted with myriad companies, including EPRI, IBM, SAIC, Energy Central, KEMA Consulting, First Solar, LogOn Consulting and Apogee Interactive.
Mark spent four years directing commercial and residential product lines and managing strategic alliances for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), which is the premiere collaborative R&D organization for the electric utility industry. He also spent thirteen years in customer service, marketing and sales management positions with Arizona Public Service Company.
During his tenure at APS, Mark directed the development of a world-class technology transfer project, the APS Environmental Showcase Home (ESH). This sustainable construction project consumes 85% less energy and 60% less water than a typical home, while showcasing over 150 sustainable technologies, strategies and materials. This project could arguably have achieved the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Platinum rating if the standards were in existence when the Home was built in 1995. The ESH reached over ten million Americans through free media and had transformational impact on the local building community. Over 40,000 people toured the Home since its completion in 1995. The Home received over 26 major environmental awards, including an international award in 1997 as the top environmental project in all of North America. The ESH was the subject of an eight-part PBS television series titled This New House, and a book titled The Environment Comes Home, for which Mr. Wilhelm was a contributing author.
Mark received his master’s degree in Environmental Planning from Arizona State University, with extensive training in energy efficient building design, building energy simulation, and solar energy technology. He also holds a bachelor’s degree cum laude in Economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
While at ASU, Mark managed the ASU Solar Test Yard at the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, worked for the U.S. Department of Energy National Solar Water Heater Workshop, and taught homeowners to build their own solar water heaters through the ASU Solar Water Heater Workshop.
He also served as Chairman of the Board of Adjustment for the City of Peoria for ten years and as a Board Member of Valley Citizen's League for six years.
