Boyd Gaming Commercial Laundry Facility

Boyd Gaming consolidated their laundry services into one centralized, owner-managed plant, by purchasing an old cosmetics warehouse. Concepts such as water conservation, on-site recycling, regional materials, and waste diversion were embraced throughout the retrofit, rewarding the project with operational savings in addition to LEED points. Going beyond the scope of LEED, high efficiency laundry equipment was chosen to reduce process water and energy use. Enzymatic detergents are used that require less heat and water, and impact the environment less than standard cleaning solvents. A waste water heat recovery system captures and reuses outgoing heat energy from the wash cycle to reduce the heat needed from the boiler. These strategies helped to earn a 25% property tax abatement from the State of Nevada for the next ten years.

Sustainable Strategies

• High efficiency boilers and waste heat recovery reduce natural gas consumption enough to save 1,911 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year, based on processing 150,000 lbs of laundry per day

• Energy efficient modifications to the envelope, lighting, and mechanical systems reduce electrical demand enough to save an additional 555 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year, based on operating hours

• Portions of asphalt and concrete in the existing building slab were demolished, crushed, and reused on-site as recycled base course material. This diverted over 3,000 tons of waste from the local landfill

• A reflective membrane coating was applied to the roof to add insulation and reduce solar heat gain into the building and improve energy performance

• LEED for New Construction SILVER level achieved

• 89% energy cost savings above ASHRAE 90.1-1999 energy standard

• 69% reduction of water use for irrigation

• 98% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill

• 95% of structurally sound walls, floor, and roof elements were preserved
